The above link is an article about a suicide bomber and the responses of various governments and people that I will be commenting on.

The suicide bomber was despondent because of a number of personal issues and was influenced by his older brother, a top Islamic Jihad militant. It was a warm, sunny day, in the middle of a bakery, and this man was wearing a long winter coat.

Indeed, what was that idiot dressed like that for? Well, I would first of all like to make the point that the bomber himself most likely did not consider himself an idiot, but was simply the result of a “lethal cocktail with three ingredients: a disaffected individual, an enabling group, and a legitimizing” ideology, as Louise Richardson states as the components of terrorist act in her book What Terrorists Want.

What Terrorists Want

He was disaffected in that “he was unemployed and his baby daughter died recently of an illness. Also, his best friend was killed in a clash with Israeli forces”. He was enabled by his elder brother and the Jihad military group, and was perhaps motivated by similar words of the crowd that was seen cheering near the bomber’s home “Mohammed be happy. You will go directly to heaven.”

In the words of the Jihad themselves as seen on their website, “The operation has a clear message to the Palestinian rivals. It is necessary to end the infighting and point the guns toward the occupation that has hurt the Palestinian people.”

Indeed, they did send a message, one that different people will interpret based on their own agendas.

Overall, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, his defense minister, Amir Peretz, and the White House, tended to agree that this was an a “grave incident” that something has to be done about. However, “Fawzi Barhoum, a Hamas spokesman in Gaza, called Monday’s attack a ‘natural response’ to Israeli military policies.” “So long as there is occupation, resistance is legitimate,” he said.

It seems to me that the viewpoints of these spokesman are all a realist approach to politics, that is, it is a struggle for power and protecting oneself. The reality is, however, that the U.S. and Israeli are the big dogs and the Jihad military group can do nothing but try to send a message and did so through this suicide bombing. It was the ideology of the Jihad group, the man’s own personal struggles, and his elder brother’s high-ranking position in the Jihad that, I believe, led to this bombing.
